Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of Huoxue Tongluo prescription combined with acupuncture for diabetic retinopathy(DR). Methods：A total of 82 cases of DR patients were divided into the control group and the study group according to the random number table method， with 41 cases in each group. The control group was treated with routine therapy and Huoxue Tongluo prescription， and the study group was additionally treated with acupuncture based on the treatment of the control group. The treatment lasted for two months. Visual acuity，average sensitivity，macular thickness， microangioma， number of bleeding points， superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde(MDA) before and after treatment as well as clinical effects were compared between the two groups. Results：After treatment，the total effective rate was 87.80% in the study group，significantly higher than that of 68.29% in the control group(P＜0.05). After treatment， the levels of visual acuity and SOD as well as average sensitivity in the two groups were increased when compared with those in the same group before treatment(P＜0.05)；and the above three indexes after treatment in the study group were higher than those in the control group(P＜0.05). After treatment， macular thickness and MDA levels in the two groups were decreased when compared with those in the same group before treatment(P＜0.05)； and the above two indexes after treatment in the study group were lower than those in the control group(P＜0.05). After treatment， microangioma and the number of bleeding points in the two groups were decreased when compared with those in the same group before treatment (P＜0.05)；and the above two indexes after treatment in the study group were lower than those in the control group(P＜0.05). Conclusion： The therapy of Huoxue Tongluo prescription combined with acupuncture for DR patients can improve clinical effects，visual acuity and antioxidant capacity，and relieve lesions of ocular fundus with a good prognosis.
