Abstract：By referring to the literatures of Chinese medicine on erysipelas，this paper sorts out the disease name，the etiology and the pathogenesis of erysipelas as well as the origin and development of its treatment based on syndrome differentiation. Erysipelas is caused by external contraction of wind-heat and malign toxin，damp-heat and heat toxin who intrude into the skin. Its pathogenesis is nothing more than wind-heat toxin accumulation，heat toxin in the qi level， dampheat toxin accumulation and heat toxin in the blood level. The treatment for erysipelas is mainly to clear heat and detoxify；the treatment for patients whose erysipelas arises from the head and face and the exterior，and is combined with wind pathogen is to additionally release the exterior with acrid-cool Chinese herbal medicine；the treatment for patients whose erysipelas is combined with damp-heat is to clear heat and drain dampness；the treatment for patients whose erysipelas arises from the interior is to cool the blood and dissipate blood stasis in the blood level. In addition， some external Chinese medicine treatments such as stone needle therapy，fire- needling cauterization method and external application therapy can also be applied.
