Abstract：Discussed the pathogenesis of chest stuffiness and pains from the perspective of weak pulse at yang and wiry pulse at yin and on the basis of ZHANG Xichun's theory of ancestral qi and phlegm-retained fluid. The understanding of weak pulse at yang was on the basis of ancestral qi，and the discussion of wiry pulse at yin was based on the theory of phlegmretained fluid. Focusing on the characteristic of chest stuffiness and pains，namely root deficiency and tip excess，made an explanation of ZHANG Xichun applying Shengxian tang to regulating and supplementing ancestral qi as well as Litan tang to the treatment of phlegm-retained fluid. It is hoped that it can provide new ideas for the treatment of chest stuffiness and pains with phlegm syndrome.
