Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of point application with Chinese herbal medicine combined with Suhuang Zhike capsules for cough caused by cold. Methods： A total of 130 cases of patients with wind invading the lung syndrome were randomly divided into the control group and the observation group，65 cases in each group. Both groups were given Suhuang Zhike capsules and comprehensive nursing measures including diet， daily living， health guidance， propaganda and education as well as psychological nursing. The observation group was additionally treated with point application with Chinese herbal medicine. Both groups were treated for seven days. Before and after treatment，the scores of Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) on the degree of cough and wind invading the lung syndrome as well as the symptom scores of cough were evaluated；the quality of life was evaluated by Leicester Cough Questionnaire(LCQ)；the disappearance time of cough was recorded. The clinical effect in the two groups was compared. Results：After treatment，the clinical effect in the observation group was better than that in the control group(P＜0.05). The VAS scores on degree of subjective cough， the symptom scores of daytime cough and nighttime cough as well as daytime and nighttime cough in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.01)；the above scores in the observation group were all lower than those in the control group(P＜0.01). The scores of wind invading the lung syndrome in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.01)，the score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group(P＜0.01). The disappearance rate of cough was 58.46% in the observation group and 40.00% in the control group，the comparison between the two groups showed significance in the difference(P＜0.05). The disappearance time of cough in the observation group was earlier than that in the control group(P＜0.05). The physiological，psychological and social scores as well as the total scores of LCQ in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.01)；the LCQ scores of each dimension and the total score in the observation group were higher than those in the control group(P＜ 0.01). Conclusion： Point application with Chinese herbal medicine combined with oral administration of Suhuang Zhike capsules for patients with cough caused by cold can further alleviate the cough symptom， promote the disappearance of cough，shorten the course of disease，and enhance the quality of life.
