Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of point application with Chinese medicine combined with rehabilitation exercise for lumbar disc herniation(LDH) of cold dampness obstruction type. Methods： A total of 84 cases of LDH patients of cold dampness obstruction type were selected and randomly divided into the control group and the observation group， 42 cases in each group. The control group was treated with Voltaren extended- release tablets and traction treatment. The observation group was additionally treated with point application with Chinese medicine combined with rehabilitation exercise based on the treatment of the control group. The scores of Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)，and the angle of straight leg raising before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. The recovery of the lumbar function in the two groups was evaluated by modified Oswestry Disability Index(ODI). The clinical effect was compared between the two groups. Results： After treatment， the scores of VAS in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the angle of straight leg raising was increased(P＜0.05)；in the observation group，the VAS score was lower than that in the control group(P＜0.05)， and the angle of straight leg raising was larger(P＜0.05). After treatment and during the two-month follow-up，the modified ODI scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P＜0.05)，and the score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group(P＜ 0.05). The total effective rate was 95.24% in the observation group，higher than that of 78.57% in the control group(P＜0.05). Conclusion： Based on routine western medicine， the therapy of point application with Chinese medicine combined with rehabilitation exercise for LDH of cold dampness obstruction type can effectively relieve pain， improve the the lumbar function，and enhance the clinical effect.
