Abstract: The etiology and pathogenesis of chest stuffiness was summarized by the study of previous literature; it is found that the main causes of the disease include emotional disorders, invasion of cold pathogen, eating disorders, overexertion and fatigue, inner damage, and body deficiency due to old age. The pathogenesis includes the disturbance of qi transformation,as well as the internal harassment of phlegm turbidity and stasis,or the sunken ancestral qi failing to serve as the dynamic force of blood circulation and respiration, resulting in inhibited qi movement as well as the dysfunction of upward and downward movement; the key pathogenesis lies in the inhibited qi movement. The syndrome types of chest stuffiness can be divided into two categories, namely deficiency, and excess. Common excess syndromes mainly include syndrome of qi stagnation in the chest, syndrome of heart blood stasis obstruction, syndrome of phlegm turbidity obstruction, and syndrome of heart-lung dryness-heat;deficiency syndrome mainly includes syndrome of sunken ancestral qi. Treatments of the diseases should follow the main principle of moving qi to soothe the chest, assisted by the method of treating deficiency by supplementation and treating excess by purgation. Thus,a prescription of chest stuffiness is invented for the treatment.
