Clinical Study on Foot Bath with Chinese Herbal Medicine Combined with Routine Therapy for Stages 3 to 4 Chronic Kidney Disease Complicated with Insomnia
Abstract:Objective:To observe the effect of foot bath with Chinese herbal medicine combined with routine therapy on sleep quality and kidney function in patients with stages 3 to 4 chronic kidney disease(CKD) complicated with insomnia. Methods: A total of 70 cases of patients with stages 3 to 4 CKD of spleen- kidney yang deficiency type complicated with insomnia were selected and divided into the control group and the observation group according to the random number table method, with 35 cases in each group. Based on routine therapy, the control group was given foot bath with lukewarm water, and the observation group was given foot bath with Chinese herbal medicine. Both groups were treated for one course, with four weeks being one course. Before and after treatment, the changes in sleep quality of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) and related indexes of kidney function including serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and glomerular filtration rates in the two groups were observed. The clinical effects in the two groups were compared. Results: After treatment, the scores of time before falling asleep, sleep efficiency, sleep time, daytime function and sleep disorders in PSQI and the total scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment, differences being significant(P<0.05); the scores of time before falling asleep, sleep efficiency, sleep time, daytime function and sleep disorders in PSQI and the total score in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, differences being significant(P<0.05). After treatment, the contents of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment, and the glomerular filtration rate was increased;the contents of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, and the glomerular filtration rate was higher, differences being significant(P<0.05). The total effective rate of clinical effect was 94.29% in the observation group and 82.86% in the control group, the difference being significant(P<0.05). Conclusion:the application of foot bath with Chinese herbal medicine combined with routine therapy for patients with stages 3 to 4 CKD of spleen-kidney yang deficiency type complicated with insomnia can effectively improve their sleep quality and kidney function.
