Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of modified Wenzhong Chubi tang combined with acupuncture for senile patients with primary osteoporosis(POP) of spleen- stomach weakness type. Methods: A total of 60 cases of senile patients with POP of spleen- stomach weakness type were selected and divided into the control group and the experiment group according to the odd-even number of registration order, with 30 cases in each group. Both groups were given routine treatment, the control group was additionally treated with acupuncture, and the experiment group was additionally treated with modified Wenzhong Chubi tang based on the treatment of the control group. Both groups were treated for three months. The bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar vertebra and left femoral neck and levels of serum bone formation markers including bone gla protein(BGP) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) before and after treatment as well as the clinical effects in the two groups were compared. Results: The clinical effect in the experiment group was better than that in the control group(P< 0.05). The total effective rate was 96.67% in the experiment group, higher than that of 73.33% in the control group(P<0.05). After treatment, BMD of lumbar vertebra and left femoral neck in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment(P<0.05), and the BMD of lumbar vertebra and left femoral neck in the experiment group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of BGP and ALP in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P<0.05), and the two levels above in the experiment group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion: The therapy of modified Wenzhong Chubi tang combined with acupuncture has a good curative effect in treating senile patients with POP of spleen-stomach weakness type, which can improve their BMD and the levels of serum bone formation markers.
