Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of Shufeng Quxie Kaiqiao tang combined with western medicine therapy for chronic suppurative otitis media(CSOM). Methods： A total of 76 cases of CSOM patients were randomly divided into the western medicine group and the integrated Chinese and western medicine group， with 38 cases in each group. The western medicine group was given routine western medicine therapies，such as antibiotics，glucocorticoid，mucoactive medications，and tympanic membrane paracentesis；the integrated Chinese and western medicine group was additionally treated with Shufeng Quxie Kaiqiao tang based on the treatment of the western medicine group. Both groups were treated for three weeks. Clinical effects after treatment were compared between the two groups. Changes in scores of main symptoms including ear stuffiness and ear pain，and hearing examination including aerial conduction and air-bone gap before and after treatment，and the recurrence rates after one-year followup were compared between the two groups. Results：The total effective rate was 94.74% in the integrated Chinese and western medicine group，higher than that of 78.95% in the western medicine group(P＜0.05). After treatment，the symptom scores of ear stuffiness and ear pain，aerial conduction and air-bone gap in the two groups were decreased when compared with those in the same group before treatment(P＜0.05)； and the symptom scores of ear stuffiness and ear pain，aerial conduction and air-bone gap in the western medicine group were lower than those in the integrated Chinese and western medicine group(P＜0.05). During the one- year follow- up， the recurrence rate was 8.33% in the integrated Chinese and western medicine group，significantly lower than that of 26.67% in the western medicine group(χ2=3.96，P＜0.05). Conclusion：Shufeng Quxie Kaiqiao tang combined with western medicine therapy has a defined effect in the treatment of CSOM patients；it can not only improve clinical symptoms and hearing，but also prevent the recurrence of the disease，and reduce the recurrence rate.
