Abstract： Objective： To observe the clinical effect of Liqi Tongfu Decoction for gastrointestinal dysfunction in senile patients with sepsis. Methods： A total of 100 cases of patients with sepsis were divided into the control group and the observation group according to the random number table method， with 48 and 52 cases in each group respectively. The control group was given routine symptomatic treatment of western medicine， and the observation group was additionally treated with Liqi Tongfu Decoction based on the treatment of the control group. Before and after treatment， the levels of inflammatory factors， gastrointestinal dysfunction scores， pH values of gastric juice， gastric emptying test， and intra- abdominal pressure were compared between the two groups. The clinical effects were compared between the two groups. Results：After treatment，the total effective rate was 86.54% in the observation group，higher than that of 64.58% in the control group (P＜0.05). Before treatment，there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of the levels of tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF- α)， interleukin- 6 (IL- 6)， and matrix metalloproteinase- 9 (MMP- 9) in serum between the two groups (P＞ 0.05). After treatment， the levels of IL- 6， TNF- α， and MMP- 9 in serum in the two groups were decreased (P＜0.05)，and the above levels in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05). Before treatment， there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of gastrointestinal dysfunction scores including abdominal pain， abdominal distension， gastrointestinal motility， bowel sound， and defecation between the two groups (P＞0.05). After treatment， the above gastrointestinal dysfunction scores in the two groups were decreased (P＜0.05)，and the above scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05). Before treatment，there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of pH values of gastric juice，gastric emptying test， and intra- abdominal pressure between the two groups (P＞0.05). After treatment， gastric empting- test and intra-abdominal pressure in the two groups were decreased (P＜0.05)，and pH values of gastric juice were increased (P＜0.05)； gastric empting- test and intra- abdominal pressure in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P＜0.05)，and the pH value of gastric juice was higher than that in the control group (P＜0.05). Conclusion：Liqi Tongfu Decoction has a good clinical effect in the treatment of senile patients with sepsis， which can effectively improve their gastrointestinal function， enhance immunity，and reduce inflammatory responses.
