Abstract: The article introduces Director LIU Yuansheng's clinical experience in treating sudden deafness. Director LIU believes that the pathogenesis of sudden deafness can be divided into two categories: external sensations and internal injuries. External sensations are often caused by invasion of external pathogens and poor lifestyle habits, and internal injuries are often caused by insufficiency of liver and kidney, and wind- phlegm obstructing the collaterals. Treatment should be based on the time and characteristics of the onset of the disease, and should be given by stages and according to syndrome differentiation. Acupuncture mainly focuses on the hand and foot shaoyang channel points, and the experiential point of “Xuan'er Point” can be selected for treatment. In the treatment of sudden deafness in acute stage with Chinese herbal medicine, formulae such as scattering and dissipating wind- heat, and calming the liver and subduing yang were applied; for stable phase, formulae such as raising yang and lifting the sunken, and enriching and nourishing the liver and kidney were used.
