Abstract:Objective:To observe the improvement effect of acupuncture and moxibustion of yin-yang harmony method combined with point massage on symptoms of daytime sleepiness and anxiety in patients with intractable insomnia. Methods: A total of 152 cases of patients with intractable insomnia were selected and divided into the observation group and the control group according to the random number table method, with 76 cases in each group. The control group was treated with routine western medicine, and the observation group was additionally treated with acupuncture and moxibustion of yin- yang harmony method combined with point massage based on the treatment of the control group. The clinical effects and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Before and after treatment, the improvement of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores, daytime sleepiness, levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5- HT) and γ- aminobutyric acid (GABA), and anxiety was compared between the two groups. Results: After treatment, the total effective rate was 96.05% in the observation group, higher than that of 86.84% in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of the scores of TCM syndromes including difficult to sleep, easy to wake up,insomnia after waking up, and agitation disorders and profuse dreaming between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, the above TCM syndrome scores in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05),and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of the scores of Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Selfrating Anxiety Scale (SAS) between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, the scores of Epworth Sleepiness Scale and SAS were decreased (P<0.05),and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference being found in the comparison of levels of 5- HT and GABA in serum between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, the levels of 5- HT and GABA in serum in the two groups were increased (P<0.05),and the levels in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference being found in the comparison of incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion:Acupuncture and moxibustion of yin-yang harmony method combined with point massage has a definite curative effect in treating intractable insomnia, and can improve symptoms of insomnia, daytime sleepiness and anxiety, and levels of neurotransmitters in the body, with good safety.
