Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of three- thread acupuncture therapy with elongated needle on lumbar disc herniation. Methods:A total of 106 patients with lumbar disc herniation were randomly divided into the elongated needle group and the routine acupuncture group, with 53 cases in each group. The routine acupuncture group was given acupuncture at routine points, and the elongated needle group was treated with elongated needle at selected points (0.3 inch and 1 inch besides the posterior midline on the back) and points on the midline of erector spinae, with same selection of distal points as that of the routine acupuncture group. With treatment for 10 times as a course of treatment, the two groups were treated for two courses. Before treatment and after two courses, the scores of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain in low extremities and lumbar and Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores (JOA) were evaluated. The incidence of adverse reactions during the treatment in the two groups were observed. Results:After two courses of treatment, the total clinical effective rate in the elongated needle group was higher than that in the routine acupuncture group (P<0.05). The VAS scores for pain in low extremities and lumbar in both groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment, and the JOA scores were increased when compared with those before treatment, differences being significant (P<0.05). The VAS score for pain in low extremities and lumbar in the elongated needle group was lower than that in the routine acupuncture group, and the JOA score was higher than that in the routine acupuncture group, differences being significant (P<0.05). Conclusion:The three-thread acupuncture therapy with elongated needle has a significant curative effect on lumbar disc herniation, which can effectively mitigate the pain in low extremities and lumbar and improve the lumbar vertebral function with less adverse reactions and high value of clinical application.
