Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of the therapy of valley union needling combined with once bone-setting tuina on lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods:A total of 106 LDH patients were selected as the study objects and divided into the control group and the observation group according to random number table method, with 53 cases in each group. The control group was treated with once bonesetting tuina, and the observation group was supplemented with valley union needling based on the treatment of the control group. The treatment lasted three weeks. The clinical effects in the two groups were compared, and the lumbar function, pain degree and serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA),interleukin- 6 (IL- 6) and tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF- α) were also compared before and after treatment. Results:The total effective rate was 90.57% in the observation group, higher than that of 73.58% in the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the scores of lumbar Oswestry and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) between the two groups (P> 0.05). On the first, second and third week after treatment, the lumbar Oswestry scores in both groups were gradually decreased (P<0.05),and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group at the same time point (P<0.05); the lumbar JOA scores in both groups were gradually increased (P<0.05),and the scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group at the same time point (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the scores of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) between the two groups (P>0.05). On the first, second and third week after treatment, the VAS scores in the two groups were gradually decreased (P<0.05),and the above scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group at the same time point (P<0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in serum levels of SOD,MDA,IL-6 and TNF-α between the two groups (P>0.05). After treatment, the serum SOD levels in the two groups were increased (P< 0.05), and the levels of MDA, IL- 6 and TNF- α in the two groups were decreased (P<0.05), and the above levels in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The therapy of valley union needling combined with once bone- setting tuina can effectively relieve the clinical symptoms of LDH patients, improve the lumbar function, reduce pain, and relieve inflammation and the degree of oxidative stress.
