Abstract:Objective:To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture assisted treatment for paraplegia of spinal cord injury and its effect on limb motor function. Methods:A total of 132 patients with paraplegia of spinal cord injury were divided into the observation group and the control group according to the random number table method, with 66 cases in each group. Both groups were treated with conventional drugs; the control group received rehabilitation training based on conventional drugs, and the observation group received acupuncture assisted treatment based on the treatment of the control group. Both groups received continuous treatment for 3 months. The clinical effects, the scores of Modified Barthel Index (MBI), American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA),and World Health Organization's Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF),and the levels of nerve growth factor (NGF), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and serotonin (5- HT) in serum were compared between the two groups. Results:During treatment,3 cases fell off and 63 cases were completed in the control group. After treatment, the total effective rate was 95.45% in the observation group, higher than that of 84.13% in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of BMI, ASIA and WHOQOL- BREF, and levels of NGF, BDNF and 5- HT in serum in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment(P<0.05), and the scores of HAMD and HAMA were decreased (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of BMI, ASIA and WHOQOL- BREF, and the levels of NGF,BDNF and 5- HT in serum in the observation group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05), and the HAMD and HAMA scores were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture in Chinese medicine has a definite curative effect on paraplegia of spinal cord injury, which can regulate the neurotransmitter levels, improve limb motor function, alleviate negative emotions, and improve quality of life.
