Clinical Study on Fumigation with Runyan Mingmu Prescription Combined with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drop for Xerophthalmia Caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of fumigation with Runyan Mingmu Prescription combined with Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drop (HYCOSAN) for patients with xerophthalmia caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: A total of 112 cases of patients with MGD-induced xerophthalmia were randomly divided into the control group and the treatment group, with 56 cases in each group. The control group was treated with HYCOSAN, and the treatment group was additionally treated with fumigation with Runyan Mingmu Prescription based on the treatment of the control group. After four weeks of treatment, the clinical effects,Tear Film Break Up Time (BUT),Corneal fluorescein staining scores (FLS) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores were compared between the two groups. Results:After treatment, the total effective rate was 89.29% in the treatment group and 75.00% in the control group, the difference being significant (P<0.05). After treatment, BUT in the two groups was increased when compared with that before treatment (P<0.05), and FLS was decreased when compared with that before treatment (P<0.05); BUT in the treatment group was longer than that in the control group (P<0.05),and FLS was lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of TCM syndromes such as dry eyes, photophobia, soreness and weakness of waist and knees, dizziness and tinnitus, and profuse dreaming in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the above scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The application of fumigation with Runyan Mingmu Prescription combined with HYCOSAN for patients with MGD-induced xerophthalmia can effectively relieve their TCM symptoms, enhance the total clinical effective rate and improve the meibomian gland functions.
