Abstract: The authors are to introduce the clinical experience of Professor CHEN Baogui in treating atrophic gastritis. Professor CHEN believes that the etiology and pathogenesis of atrophic gastritis are complicated, mainly as followed: a) damp-turbidity and heat toxin immersion, and cold and heat in complexity;b) constraint and stagnation of static blood in the stomach collateral vessels, and accumulation of each pathogen;c) restriction of vigorous liver on spleen earth, and disordered qi movement;d) damage to the spleen due to excessive worry, and disharmony between the stomach and the heart; e) overconsumption of fluids due to long-lasting diseases, and inability to flourish and tonify the stomach. The spleen-qi deficiency and detriment are throughout the disease. In clinical practice, the focus should be paid to the treatment with traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and microscopic appearances under gastroscope by syndrome differentiation. The methods usually applied are tonifying the spleen and replenishing qi, tonifying and transporting the middle energizer, clearing heat and resolving dampness, resolving toxins and removing turbidity, invigorating blood and dissolving stasis, freeing the collateral vessels with the pungent medicines that can moisten the body, soothing the liver and harmonizing the stomach, raising the clear and directing the turbid downward, awakening the spleen and opening the orifices, regulating both the stomach and heart, boosting qi and nourishing yin, and securing and protecting gastric mucosa. The medication should pay attention to integrate Chinese medicine with western medicine with reference to modern pharmacology.
