Abstract:Objective:To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture combined with occupational therapy on schizophrenia and its effects on social function. Methods: A total of 80 cases of patients with schizophrenia were divided into the observation group and the control group according to the random number table method, with 40 cases in each group. The two groups were treated with Clozapine Tablets. The control group was additionally treated with occupational therapy based on Clozapine Tablets, and the observation group was additionally treated with acupuncture based on the treatment of the control group. Both groups were treated for six weeks. Clinical effects, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores, neurotransmitter, and Personal and Social Function Scale (PSP) scores were compared between the two groups. Results:After six-week treatment, the total effective rate was 92.50% in the observation group, which was higher than that of 75.00% in the control group, difference being significant (P<0.05). The scores of BPRS in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment, and the BPRS scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, differences being significant (P<0.05). The levels of γ -aminobutyric acid (GABA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and dopamine (DA) in serum in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment, and the levels of GABA, 5-HT, and DA in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, differences being significant (P<0.05). The scores of PSP in the two groups were enhanced when compared with those before treatment, and the PSP scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, differences being significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture combined with occupational therapy for schizophrenia can, improve clinical symptoms, enhance personal abilities, and help patients return to society as soon as possible. Its mechanism of action may be related to increasing serum neurotransmitter levels.
