Abstract：Clinical studies on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Chinese medicine mostly focus on the pathogenesis of spleen and kidney deficiency，and rarely analyze the underlying pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis from the perspective of extraordinary vessels depletion and malnutrition. Based on the theories of eight extraordinary vessels elaborated in Huang Di Nei Jing （The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic），Nan Jing （The Classic of Difficult Issues）， Qi Jing Ba Mai Kao （Consideration of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels） and Lin Zheng Zhi Nan Yi An （Case Records as a Guide to Clinical Practice）， the authors propose to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis from theories of eight extraordinary vessels，and think that its core pathogenesis is extraordinary vessels depletion and malnutrition. Starting from YE Tianshi's supplementing and unblocking methods， this paper finds that the treatment is based on the supplementing method， and emphasizes the use of animal medicinals， supplementing essence and marrow， and boosting eight extraordinary vessels to nourish the essence and blood of twelve channels. The treatment also applies the unblocking method， uses bitter， acrid and aromatic medicinals， and diffuses and unblocks the qi of extraordinary vessels， to make extraordinary vessels and twelve channels smooth and free. The treatment is also supplemented with medicinals for strengthening the spleen and tonifying the kidney， so as to nourish the foundation of congenital and postnatal constitution；attention is paid to the use of wind medicinals and wind acupoints. In the use of supplementing， and diffusing and unblocking channel qi， the supplementing method is combined with unblocking method， and dynamic and static treatments work together，so as to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This plays an important role in perfecting the theories of the disease and clinical practice.
