Abstract:Professor HUANG Yan's theory on the "sea of blood in brain" posits three characteristics:First,it is all-encompassing, gathering a vast amount of nourishing substances and establishing extensive connections with the body's functional structures. Second,it is prone to fluctuations, with the stored substances constantly changing. Third, the total amount of refined blood and other substances in the sea of blood must be maintained within appropriate levels, as excess or deficiency can lead to disease. Professor HUANG believes that the occurrence of insomnia is invariably related to the insufficiency of refined substances in the brain's sea of blood, disrupted communication and transportation, and imbalances in excess and deficiency. She identifies the core pathogenesis of insomnia as qi and blood deficiency, exuberance of yang with decline of yin, yin-yang disharmony, and restless of brain and spirit. Her treatment emphasizes the principles of tonifying deficiency and reducing excess, and harmonizing yin and yang, with a focus on regulating the heart, liver, and spleen, while also paying attention to the lung and kidney. This has led to a distinctive approach to treating insomnia characterized by clearing heart heat and calming the mind, strengthening the spleen and nourishing the blood, and soothing and calming the liver. Additionally, she emphasizes the selection of tranquillizing medicinal based on the actual condition to promote synergistic effects of medicines, aiming to achieve the state of "stable yin and compact yang will ensure harmoney of essence and spirit".
