Abstract: Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture combined with point application on swallowing function and quality of life in patients with dysphagia after ischemic stroke (IS). Methods:A total of 208 patients with dysphagia after IS admitted to Hangzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University from March 2021 to November 2023 were selected as the study subjects, and they were randomly divided into a control group and a treatment group according to the random number table method, with 104 patients in each group. The control group received point application based on conventional symptomatic treatment, and the treatment group received acupuncture treatment based on the control group. Clinical effects and incidence of complications were compared between the two groups; the changes in swallowing function [the scores of the kubota Water Swallow Test (WST), Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA), Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), and Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS)],nutritional status [serum albumin (Alb),hemoglobin (Hb),vitamin C,magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), and the scores of Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002)], and quality of life scores were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results:After treatment, both WST and SSA scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and FOIS and VFSS scores were increased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05);the WST and SSA scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group( P<0.05),and the FOIS and VFSS scores in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of Alb, Hb, vitamin C, Mg, and P in the two groups were enhanced when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the NRS2002 scores were declined when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05); the levels of Alb, Hb, vitamin C, Mg, and P in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05), and NRS2002 scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). During the treatment, the incidence of complications was 22.12% (23/104) in the control group and 10.58% (11/104) in the treatment group, with the difference being significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the total effective rate in the treatment group was 90.38% (94/104), while that in the control group was 72.12% (75/104),with the difference being significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the scores of social function, physical function, psychological function, and material life status in the two groups were evaluated when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the scores of social function, physical function, psychological function, and material life status in the treatment group were higher than those in the control group (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture combined with point application has a good therapeutic effect on patients with dysphagia after IS, which effectively promotes the recovery of their swallowing function, improves their nutritional status, reduces the occurrence of complications, and enhances their quality of life.
