Abstract: The etiology and pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR) are related to the function of defensive qi, which is manifested in its generation, movement, and circulation, and follows a certain temporal pattern. Professor WANG Fu believes that the movement of defensive qi has two key points:one is the emergence of defensive qi from the lower energizer, and the other is its emergence from the upper energizer, referred to as defensive qi emerging from two regions. He also believes that the hub for regulating the movement of defensive qi in the lower and upper energizers lies in the liver and spleen of the middle energizer. The key for treating AR lies in regulating the function of defensive qi, which involves reinforcing the root and seeking the source by emphasizing the lower energizer, treating the heart and lung simultaneously to open and disperse the upper energizer, and facilitating the circulation and transformation in the middle energizer. The prevention and treatment of AR should be understood and guided from the perspective of the movement patterns of defensive qi at the lower and upper energizers.
