Abstract： Objective： To observe the effect of Paronychia External Washing Formula on pain， inflammatory indicators，recurrence，and foot function in patients with toenail paronychia of damp-heat obstruction type. Methods： A total of 112 patients with toenail paronychia of damp-heat obstruction type who received treatment at the Hangzhou Third People's Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024 were selected and randomly divided into the observation group and the control group，with 56 patients in each group. The control group was treated with Erythromycin Ointment，while the observation group was treated with Paronychia External Washing Formula based on the treatment of the control group. Both groups received continuous treatment for four weeks. Compared the pain levels [Visual Analogue Scale （VAS）]， inflammatory indicators [white blood cell count （WBC），C-reactive protein （CRP），and interleukin-1 β （IL-1β）]， recurrence rates，and foot function [Foot Function Index （FFI）] between the two groups. Results：After four weeks of treatment，both groups showed a decrease in pain VAS scores when compared with that before treatment （P＜0.05）， with the observation group having lower pain VAS score than the control group （P＜0.05）. After four weeks of treatment， the levels of WBC，CRP，and IL-1β in both groups decreased when compared with those before treatment （P＜0.05）， and the levels of WBC， CRP， and IL-1 β in the observation group were lower than those in the control group （P＜ 0.05）. Follow up for six months after treatment， the recurrence rate in the observation group was 31.37% （16/51）， which was lower than that of 59.57% （28/47） in the control group （P＜0.05）. Follow up for six months after treatment， both groups showed a decrease in FFI scores when compared with that before treatment （P＜0.05），with the observation group having a lower FFI score than the control group （P＜0.05）. Conclusion： The Paronychia External Washing Formula can treat toenail paronychia of damp-heat obstruction type，inhibit inflammation，reduce infection and pain in patients，promote foot function recovery，and reduce recurrence.
