Abstract:Objective:To observe the effectiveness of acupuncture combined with relaxation therapy in improving the success rate of reducing and discontinuing Zolpidem in patients with simple insomnia who have long-term overused Zolpidem. Methods: A total of 97 patients with simple insomnia treated at Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital from December 2021 to September 2023 were included as study subjects and randomly divided into the treatment group (49 cases) and the control group (48 cases). Both groups received gradual reduction of Zolpidem Tablets combined with relaxation therapy, while the treatment group additionally received acupuncture therapy. The treatment courses for both groups were four weeks. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores were assessed before treatment,at the day 14 and day 28 of treatment. The average daily total sleep duration, average daily sleep onset time, and average daily deep sleep time were compared between the two groups during the first phase (days 1 to 14) and the second phase (days 15 to 28). The sleep quality compliance rates,Zolpidem dosage reduction and successful dose reduction and discontinuation compliance rates, and the proportion of patients with ISI scores ≤15 at the day 14 and day 28 of treatment were statistically compared. Results: The proportion of patients with ISI scores ≤15 at the day 14 and day 28 of treatment was slightly lower in the treatment group than in the control group, there being no significance in differences (P>0.05). The sleep quality compliance rates in the treatment group during both of the first phase and the second phase were slightly higher than those in the control group, the differences were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). In the second phase, the Zolpidem dosage reduction compliance rate in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After four weeks of treatment, the success rate of dose reduction and discontinuation in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). During the treatment period, there were no significant differences in the average daily total sleep duration, average daily sleep onset time, or average daily deep sleep time between the two groups at any time point (P>0.05). The average daily total sleep duration in the treatment group was longer than that in the control group, and the average daily sleep onset time was slightly shorter. In the first phase, the average daily deep sleep time in the treatment group was longer, while in the second phase, the average daily deep sleep time in the control group was longer. Conclusion: Acupuncture combined with relaxation therapy can alleviate the impact of reducing and discontinuing Zolpidem on sleep quality in patients with simple insomnia who have long-term overused Zolpidem. It can also mitigate adverse reactions and drug dependence caused by long-term medication use to some extent, helping patients successfully navigate the reduction and discontinuation period and improving the success rate of reduction and discontinuation.
