Abstract: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common complication of diabetes, often leads to blurred vision and significantly impairs the quality of life of patients. Professor JIN Mei proposes that the pathogenesis of DR is rooted in the spleen and stomach, with "deficiency, stasis, and phlegm" as key pathogenic factors. This perspective is based on the geographical characteristics of Lingnan region—particularly the humid climate in Lingnan region and insufficiency of "earth qi" —which predispose patients to dysfunction of the middle energizer. For the non-proliferative stage, JIN's treatment emphasizes strengthening the spleen, resolving phlegm, and harmonizing the stomach, while for the proliferative stage the treatment focuses on regulating the qi movement of middle energizer, cooling blood and stopping bleeding, and invigorating blood and promoting urination. JIN flexibly modifies prescriptions, make qi movement free and eye collaterals unblocked, and this offers novel insights into Chinese medicine treatment of DR.
