Abstract: This article analyzes the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment principles, and characteristics of prescription selection and medication use in abnormal taste based on the physiological and pathological theories of the five viscera,as described in Zhang Shi Yi Tong (Comprehensive Medicine According to Master Zhang). It summarizes ZHANG Lu's basic ideas on treating abnormal taste. Although each of the five viscera is associated with a specific taste, they are all closely related to the spleen and stomach. For example, sour taste is attributed to damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, which is also related to the dysfunction of the spleen and stomach; bitter taste is attributed to heat constraint in the gallbladder and heat in the heart,as well as the reversal of stomach qi;acrid taste is attributed to excessive heat in the lungs, which is also related to the dysfunction of the spleen and stomach's ascending and descending movements;salty taste is attributed to kidney deficiency and hyperactivity of fire, which is also related to the deficiency of spleen qi.
