Abstract: The theory of gate-bolt-hinge is one of the important contents of Huang Di Nei Jing Tai Su(Grand Simplicity of ‘The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic’),which refers to Taiyang and Taiyin as the gate,Yangming and Jueyin as the bolt, and Shaoyang and Shaoyin as the hinge. The theory of gate-bolt-hinge explains the qi transformation rules of the three yin and three yang of the hands and feet. Based on the physiological functions and pathological changes of the gate-bolt-hinge and its correlation with meridians, this article analyzes the etiology and pathogenesis of postpartum depression as functional impairment of the gate-bolt leads to over-consumption of qi and blood, with deficiency and stasis coexisting;while impairment of the hinge-bolt function results in failure of the blood to nourish the heart, causing disturbance of mental activity. In the treatment of postpartum depression, acupuncture is recommended to regulate the gate-bolt of Taiyin-Taiyang-Yangming,enabling essence and blood to converge and generate normally; and to nourish the hinge-bolt of Jueyin-Shaoyin,thus promoting harmonious distribution and storage of qi and blood.
