Abstract： Professor XU Liran established the theory of "spleen as the pivotal mechanism" summarizing the pathogenesis of chronic gastritis of intermingled cold and heat type as impaired middle energizer pivot， spleen deficiency and stomach excess， and intermingled cold and heat． He emphasized the pivotal role of the spleen in the generation and transformation， normal circulation， and balance of qi and blood． Despite of complex in the pathogenesis， the root etiology of this condition lies in dysfunction of middle energizer pivotal mechanism and disharmony between the spleen and stomach．In treatment，emphasis is placed on the holism syndrome differentiation and treatment，and regulation of the pivotal mechanism．The core therapeutic principle put forward by Professor XU is "Activating and smoothing the pivotal mechanism， regulating and harmonizing the spleen and stomach. " He also proposes a gastric disease treatment rule of "regulating the pivotal mechanism with acrid medicinals to open and bitter medicinals to promote descent， and balancing cold-heat by regulating and harmonizing the spleen and stomach". Therefore， he develops the self-formulated Banxia Juzhu Decoction， which shows a significant curative effect on chronic gastritis with intermingled cold and heat syndrome.
