Abstract: Infantile diarrhea is commonly seen in pediatrics. You Ke Fa Hui(An Expounding of Pediatrics)by WAN Quan in the Ming Dynasty discussed the etiology and pathogenesis of diarrhea in detail, and summarized WAN's experience in treating diarrhea by syndrome differentiation. In terms of the etiology, it can be divided into five categories, including watery diarrhea caused by dampness excess,undigested-food diarrhea caused by wind invasion, loose stool diarrhea caused by cold infusion, gushing diarrhea caused by heat constriction, and dysentery-like diarrhea caused by accumulation stagnation, which can be treated respectively by fortifying earth and repressing wood, dispersing pathogens separately and discharging, warming the center and dissipating cold, clearing heat and draining dampness, and eliminating root cause and arresting pathologic flow. Based on the conception of five kinds of diarrhea in Nan Jing(The Classics of Difficult Issues),combining the process of digestion and transportation of food and water in the body, WAN divided diarrhea into stomach diarrhea, small intestine diarrhea, spleen diarrhea, large intestine diarrhea and kidney diarrhea and used prescriptions and medication based on the physiological and pathological characteristics of different zang-fu organs.
