Abstract: This article introduces Professor LAO Changhui's clinical experience in treating upper airway cough syndrome. Professor LAO Changhui believes that the pathogenesis of upper airway cough syndrome is fundamentally a deficiency in origin with excess in menifestation. The manifest excess is due to external pathogens invading through the nasopharynx and affecting the lung along the meridians; the fundamental deficiency originates from the failure of the spleen to nourish the lung, resulting in qi deficiency of the lung and spleen. In the diagnostic and treatment process, emphasis is placed on the comprehensive application of the four diagnostic methods. It is essential to first carefully identify the characteristics of the cough, thoroughly examine the nasopharyngeal signs, and focus on determining whether the primary cause is allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or pharyngitis, while excluding globus hystericus and liver cough to establish a clear diagnosis. Professor LAO Changhui's syndrome differentiation and treatment are based on external and internal injuries. For external injuries, treatment focuses on dispelling wind and phlegm, and clearing the throat; for internal injuries, treatment focuses on the lung and spleen, and emphasizes replenishing qi and consolidating the exterior, while also nourishing yin and moistening dryness, treating each condition accordingly. In diagnosis and treatment, he advocates the integration of traditional Chinese and western medicine, combined with dietary care to enhance the healthy qi,thus achieving significant clinical efficacy.
