Abstract: This paper analyzes LIU Wansu's academic thoughts on emotions from six aspects: the concept of emotions, etiology and pathogenesis of emotional disorders and related diseases, characteristics of emotional disorders, treatment of emotional disorders and related diseases, and emotional health preservation, based on his works Su Wen Xuan Ji Yuan Bing Shi(Explanation of Mysterious Pathogeneses and Etiologies Based on the ‘Basic Questions’),Su Wen Bing Ji Qi Yi Bao Ming Ji(Collection of Writings on the Mechanism of Disease, Suitability of Qi, and the Safeguarding of Life as Discussed in the‘Basic Questions’),and Huang Di Su Wen Xuan Ming Lun Fang(Formulas from the Discussion Illuminating the Yellow Emperor's Basic Questions). LIU Wansu's understanding of emotions includes two aspects:the seven emotions and the five minds. The seven emotions refer to joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, aversion, and desire(liking), which are innate to humans. The five minds refer to anger, joy, sorrow (anxiety),thought, and fear, which originate from the qi transformation of the five zang organs and are associated with them—anger belongs to the liver, joy to the heart, thought to the spleen, sorrow(anxiety)to the lung, and fear to the kidney. In terms of etiology, LIU Wansu believed that emotional disorders and related diseases are associated with improper upbringing, diet and medications, and incorrect or failed treatments. Regarding pathogenesis,he proposed that emotional disorders and related diseases are mostly related to heat and fire. Heat and fire causing lung dryness lead to sorrow;excessive heart fire leads to extreme joy and laughter;kidney water deficiency and heart fire excess result in loss of will, shame, itching, and laughter;excessive heart fire, internal accumulated heat, kidney water deficiency, and heart fire excess suddenly disturbing the heart spirit cause fright; liver qi deficiency, kidney water deficiency, and loss of kidney will lead to fear;heart fire excess, water deficiency, and fire excess cause liver hyperactivity and anger;fire excess and water deficiency leading to loss of kidney will cause confusion;gallbladder deficiency and liver deficiency-heat result in indecisiveness; heart fire flaring upward, heat in the heart and diaphragm, liver blood deficiency, kidney water deficiency, and heart fire excess cause restlessness and irritability;extreme heart heat and excessive joy lead to mania; fire excess restricting metal and failing to restrain wood, and liver qi excess lead to excessive anger and madness. Regarding the characteristics of emotional disorders,LIU Wansu believed that excessive emotions damage the essential qi of their corresponding organs, that emotional disorders often manifest as heat and fire, and that emotional damage can lead to qi and blood imbalance. In terms of treatment, for anger-related diseases,LIU Wansu focused on nourishing yin, calming the heart, clearing and pacifying the liver, supplemented by regulating qi; for fright-related diseases, he emphasized clearing heat, draining fire, purging, nourishing yin, and calming the heart;for irritability-related diseases, his approach included clearing heat, draining fire, purging, dispersing heat, nourishing yin, enriching blood, and calming the heart. In terms of emotional health preservation,LIU Wansu stressed understanding human desires through dreams, considering desires as detrimental to health preservation. Those skilled in health preservation must distance themselves from desires and avoid being disturbed by desires, while also emphasizing harmony with the four seasons to regulate the spirit.
