Clinical Study on Juanbi Decoction Combined with Taibai Tongluo Gel Plaster for Knee Osteoarthritis of Cold-Damp Obstruction Type at Early-Middle Stage
Abstract: Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Juanbi Decoction combined with Taibai Tongluo Gel Plaster on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) of cold-damp obstruction type at early-middle stage. Methods : A total of 68 cases of patients with KOA of cold-damp obstruction type at early-middle stage, who were treated in the outpatient department of joint surgery at Chinese Medicine Hospital of Puyang from February 2023 to July 2024 were selected and divided into the observation group and the control group according to the random number table method, with 34 cases in each group. The observation group was given the oral administration of Juanbi Decoction combined with external application of Taibai Tongluo Gel Plaster, and the control group was given the oral administration of Celecoxib and Glucosamine Sulfate Capsules. Both groups were treated for three weeks. The clinical effects were compared between the two groups;the changes in Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores for walking and resting pain,Short Form-36( SF-36) scores, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, and traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results: After three weeks of treatment, the total effective rate was 94.12% (32/34) in the observation group, which was higher than 79.41% (27/34) in the control group (P<0.05). The VAS scores for walking and resting pain in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). The SF-36 scores in the two groups were increased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the SF-36 score in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P< 0.05). The WOMAC scores in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the WOMAC score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores for joint pain, joint swelling, limited flexion and extension, morning stiffness, and cold pain in limbs in the two groups were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the scores for joint swelling, limited flexion and extension, morning stiffness, and cold pain in limbs in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05),while there was no significant difference in joint pain scores between the observation group and the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion:Juanbi Decoction combined with Taibai Tongluo Gel Plaster for KOA of cold-damp obstruction type at early-middle stage can effectively enhance clinical efficacy, relieve clinical symptoms, reduce knee pain, improve knee function, and enhance quality of life.
