Abstract: This article introduces Professor QIU Baoshan's clinical experience in differentiating and treating chronic hoarseness based on regional characteristics of Lingnan. Chronic hoarseness is a chronic laryngeal disorder characterized by long-term voice hoarseness, encompassing various conditions such as chronic laryngitis, vocal nodules, and vocal polyps. Professor QIU,considering the unique geographical climate, dietary habits, and physical constitution of the population in the Lingnan region, proposed that "the affliction of damp-heat first damages the spleen and stomach, chronic illness affects the collaterals, and both qi and yin are deficient" was the core pathogenesis of chronic hoarseness. This has led to a syndrome differentiation and treatment approach that is "tailored to the region, the individual, and the constitution. " Professor QIU summarizes chronic hoarseness into three common syndrome types for treatment: damp-heat accumulation, lung-spleen qi deficiency, and lung-kidney yin deficiency, and administers treatment accordingly. For damp-heat accumulation with phlegm congelation in the throat, the treatment focuses on clearing heat, removing dampness, resolving phlegm, and dispersing masses, supplemented by activating blood circulation. For lung-spleen qi deficiency with ascending damp-turbidity, the treatment emphasizes tonifying qi, strengthening the spleen, resolving dampness, and restore the voice. For lung-kidney yin deficiency with flaring up of deficient fire, the treatment aims to replenish yin, purge fire, moisten the throat, and restore the voice. Additionally, to address the clinical need for long-term conditioning and consolidating therapeutic effects in chronic hoarseness, Professor QIU Baoshan formulates syndrome-specific Chinese medicinal paste prescriptions, establishing a treatment model that "combines disease treatment with deficiency supplementation, equally emphasizing pathogen elimination and constitution regulation." This approach has often achieved favorable outcomes in clinical practice.
