Abstract: Objective: To observe the efficacy of Runchang Wan combined with western medicine in treating postpartum constipation. Methods: Seventy postpartum constipation patients treated at Zhoushan Putuo District People's Hospital from July 2023 to July 2024 were selected and randomly divided into a trial group (n=35,treated with Runchang Wan combined with western medicine) and a control group (n=35, treated with western medicine alone). Both groups were treated continuously for four weeks. Clinical efficacy and incidence of adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Changes in traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores, constipation severity [Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM) scores],quality of life [Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life (PAC-QOL) scores], and gastrointestinal hormone levels [substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)] were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results:After treatment, the total effective rate was 91.43% (32/35) in the trial group and 74.29% (26/35) in the control group, the difference being significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores of the two groups were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the traditional Chinese medicine syndrome scores of the trial group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the PAC-SYM scores of the two groups were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the PAC-SYM scores of the trial group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the PAC-QOL scores of the two groups were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and the PAC-QOL scores of the trial group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). After treatment,SP levels of the two groups were increased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and VIP levels were decreased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05);the SP level of the trial group was higher than that of the control group (P<0.05),and the VIP level of the trial group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion:Runchang Wan combined with western medicine demonstrates good efficacy in treating postpartum constipation, improving bowel movements, and enhancing quality of life.
