Abstract：Objective：To observe the clinical efficacy of umbilical acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture in the treatment of myalgic temporomandibular disorders （TMDM）. Methods：Eighty patients with TMDM admitted to the Department of Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Rehabilitation， Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January to December 2024 were selected and divided into the observation group and the control group using the random number table method，with 40 cases in each group. The control group received electroacupuncture treatment， while the observation group received umbilical acupuncture in addition to the electroacupuncture treatment given to the control group. Both groups were treated twice a week for a total of two weeks. Indicators including Visual Analogue Scale（ VAS） score，pain-free maximum mouth opening（ MMO），pressure pain threshold（ PPT），Craniomandibular Index （CMI） score， and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 （OHIP-14） score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results： After treatment， VAS scores in both groups decreased compared to before treatment （P＜0.05），and the VAS score in the observation group was lower than that in the control group （P＜0.05） . After treatment，pain-free MMO in both groups increased compared to before treatment （P＜0.05），and the pain-free MMO in the observation group was greater than that in the control group （P＜0.05） . After treatment， PPT of the temporal and masseter muscles increased in both groups compared to before treatment （P＜0.05），and the PPT of the temporal and masseter muscles in the observation group was higher than that in the control group （P＜0.05） . After treatment， CMI and OHIP-14 scores decreased in both groups compared to before treatment （P＜0.05）， and these scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group （P＜0.05） . Conclusion： Umbilical acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture shows definite clinical efficacy in the treatment of TMDM. It can effectively relieve local temporomandibular joint pain，increase the pain threshold，and improve mandibular function and oral health-related quality of life in patients.
