Abstract: Objective: To observe the efficacy of flash cupping combined with thumbtack needle therapy in treating constipation after thoracolumbar fracture surgery. Methods: A total of 80 patients with constipation after thoracolumbar fracture surgery admitted to Jiaxing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2022 to August 2024 were selected and randomly divided into a conventional group and a combined group according to the random number table method, with 40 cases in each group. The conventional group received routine treatment, while the combined group received additional flash cupping combined with thumbtack needle therapy based on the conventional group's treatment. The bowel movement status and clinical efficacy were compared between the two groups. Changes in constipation symptom scores, traditional Chinese medicine symptom scores, Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM), and Patient Assessment of Quality of Life in Constipation (PAC-QOL) before and after treatment were also compared. Results:The combined group showed shorter first exhaust time, first defecation time, defecation duration per episode, and defecation interval compared to the conventional group (P<0.05),and had more frequent bowel movements within three days (P>0.05). After treatment, the frequency of bowel sounds increased in both groups compared to before treatment (P<0.05), with the combined group showing more frequent bowel sounds than the conventional group (P<0.05). After treatment, constipation symptom scores (including stool consistency, straining during defecation, defecation time, sensation of incomplete evacuation, defecation frequency, and abdominal distension) decreased in both groups compared to before treatment (P<0.05),and the combined group had lower scores in all six items than the conventional group (P<0.05). After treatment, traditional Chinese medicine symptom scores, PAC-SYM scores, and PAC-QOL scores decreased in both groups compared to before treatment, and the combined group had lower scores in all three items than the conventional group (P<0.05). The total clinical efficacy rate was 95.00% (38/40) in the combined group and 75.00% (30/40) in the conventional group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: Flash cupping combined with thumbtack needle therapy for thoracolumbar fracture can improve abdominal distension and sensation of incomplete evacuation, enhance quality of life, and improve treatment efficacy.
